Bio
Judy Tuwaletstiwa has been a visual artist, writer and teacher for fifty years. In her visual art, she has worked with different materials, including sand, mud, feathers, sticks, fiber and acrylic on canvas. In 2012, she began incorporating kiln fired glass into her work. More recently, she has added raku fired clay to the visual conversation.

Her limited-edition books, The Canyon Poem, 1997, Mapping Water, 2007, and Glass, 2016, (Radius Books) seek, through visual images and words, to embody the experience of the creative process and its relationship to the unconscious.

Her books and paintings reside in numerous private, corporate and public collections.

Born in Los Angeles, California in 1941, she received her B. A. in English Literature, concentrating on the English Medieval period, from the University of California at Berkeley in 1962. She received her M.A.T. in English Literature from Harvard University in 1963.

She lived in Northern California for thirty years, pursuing her art while raising four children. In 1993, she remarried and moved to the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona where she and her husband, Phillip, lived for twelve years. They now live in Galisteo, New Mexico.

She writes:

Our first language is the rhythmic beating of our mother’s heart. Our second language is the touch of our mother’s skin. My art grows from these languages that need no translation.
