INNOVATION IN ACTION: How to Avoid an Asteroid
1st Floor - Theater
Featuring Terik Daly, Planetary Scientist, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory
It was the stuff of Hollywood: a mission to change the path of an asteroid by slamming it with a projectile hurtling through space at 14,000 miles per hour. But it was completely real. The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) was the world’s first successful planetary defense test and an award-winning triumph for the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (including a World Changing Ideas award from Fast Company). In this session, a member of the DART team explains how they pulled it off—and how the project could protect the planet from dangerous asteroids in the future.
